GSMA Board
The
GSMA is the operator-led trade association representing
the global mobile industry. Encompassing technical, commercial
and public policy initiatives, the GSMA focuses on ensuring
wireless services work globally, thereby enhancing the
value of mobile services to individual users and national
economies while creating new business opportunities for
operators and their supplier partners.
Constituted in 2003, the Board provides the GSMA's
membership with a stronger voice, clearer direction, and
faster decision-making.
The GSMA's 27 Board Members include 25 operator representatives,
the Chair of the Executive Management Committee - the body
that manages the Association's ongoing activities in the
area of products and services - and the GSMA CEO Rob
Conway.
Each of the twelve largest operator groups within the Association's
membership is entitled to nominate one board member. Eleven
other operator members are nominated to reflect the needs
of small, independent operators and to ensure global representation.
The GSM Association Board is Chaired by Craig
Ehrlich of Hutchison.

Craig Ehrlich is currently serving his third term as Chairman of the GSMA. Craig joined Hutchison Whampoa in 2003 as a board member of Hutchison Mobile Communications and now advises the group's 3G and 2G businesses worldwide. Craig has been involved in Hong Kong's communications industry since he first settled in Hong Kong in 1987, and has been a Hong Kong resident since then. Rob Conway joined the GSMA in 1999, and in 2003 became a founder member of its Board. Under his leadership, the breadth and scope of the GSMA has expanded rapidly, reflecting the growth and success of the mobile phone industry worldwide. In 2003 Rob led the transition of the GSMA to a Board-led structure, positioning the GSMA as the global trade organisation for the mobile world with the aim of accelerating the time to market and ensuring the global availability of new and developing mobile services. The GSMA now represents more than 700 GSM mobile operator members and 200 manufacturer and supplier associate members across 218 countries of the world. Its members collectively serve over a third of the world's population.
Working closely with senior executives of member companies and other industry leaders, Rob leads a GSMA agenda encompassing commercial, public policy, strategic and technical initiatives focused on enhancing the economic and social value of mobile services to users, countries and governments while creating new business opportunities for its members. Recent GSMA initiatives include the Personal Instant Messaging programme, as well as the 3G For All initiative, which aims to make multimedia third-generation services accessible to a much wider user base. Meanwhile, Rob has helped spearhead the GSMA's efforts to bridge the digital divide through programmes such as the pioneering Emerging Market Handset initiative and the GSMA Development Fund. In addition, Rob Conway has driven the establishment of the GSMA's event portfolio, which includes the control and production of the 3GSM World Congress events in Barcelona and Macau.
