Cities around the world are facing a dual challenge of a growing population and climate change. To ensure that the cities of the future are safe and healthy places to live and work, smart city initiatives are being established globally.

Smart cities are deploying innovative digital service layers that use sensing and control, analytics and ubiquitous communications to empower both citizens and businesses to understand the cost of living in real time. This will drive efficiencies in the use of energy and improve travel and transport systems. Cities will allocate resources more efficiently to save costs and transition to a low carbon economy.

The mobile industry will play a fundamental role in the emerging Smart Cities multibillion dollar value chain.

Collectively, mobile operators own the network infrastructure best placed to deliver digital services to the growing number of urban citizens. Mobile operators are also well positioned to provide the technology platform from which these future services can be delivered and to orchestrate the disparate ecosystems that will support the future Smart Cities.

The GSMA Smart Cities initiative works to accelerate the adoption of mobile based solutions and services. GSMA is also working with the City of Barcelona and Generalitat de Catalunya to establish the Smart City Initiative as part of the Mobile World Capital.
