Initially the pilot will focus on 'Shared Access to Voice' and 'Shared Access to Data' services, however in the future the feasibility of other services will be explored, for example m-banking and health information systems. Specific technology solutions will be confirmed in Q1 of 2008.
'Shared Access to Voice' is where a GSM telecommunications device is shared, for a fee paid to a local entrepreneur within a community. The device acts as a public call office (PCO), allowing the community to enjoy shared public access to telephony.
'Shared Access to Data' is the creation of a GSM-connected internet terminal shared within a community operated by a local entrepreneur. High speed GSM data networks are used including GPRS, EDGE and HSPA, which allow a range of e-services, for example simple internet access, family and community communication, job search and applications, news, telemedicine and education. It also encompasses the connectivity of educational institutions including schools and universities for e-learning and ICT development.
