Focus Areas

Focus Areas
The GSMA Development Fund works with mobile operators to accelerate mobile solutions for people living under $2 per day. Our aim is to help connect the unconnected and drive social, environmental and economic development in these countries. We focus our activities on three key areas: Connectivity, Energy and mServices.

Connectivity

We work with operators and vendors to test and scale business models that bring sustainable GSM voice and data connectivity to the poor. Projects in this area include:

  • Shared Access to Voice
Providing a GSM telecommunication device that is shared within a community by local entrepreneurs, who charge a minimal fee for the service.
  • Shared Access to Data
Using enhanced GSM networks to bring Internet access to computers in fixed booths run by local entrepreneurs in rural and developing communities.

We have also applied GSM technology to special projects such as Refugee Connectivity and Conservation to support the management of wildlife and conservation of the environment.

Energy

We work with alternative energy providers (including wind and solar) to develop cost-effective power solutions for GSM base stations and handsets. Projects in this area include:

mServices

We work with entrepreneurs and operators to launch value-adding mobile services for the poor such as m-banking and m-health. Projects in this area include:

  • Phones for Health
A partnership with the US Government, Motorola, MTN, Accenture and Voxiva, using mobile phone coverage in the developing world to strengthen health systems.
