GSM Europe applauds EC recognition of European Mobile Operator Needs |

Brussels,
Belgium: 5th February 2004: GSM
Europe, the European Interest Group of the GSM
Association, today welcomed the principal theme
of the European Commission's 3G policy document,
issued this week. Crucially, the Commission recognised
that in order to achieve the growth critical
to meeting its own eEurope objectives, more public
and private investment in telecoms is required.
Industry commentators expect this issue to be
included on the agenda of the Spring Council
in March.
"Without investment-friendly regulation across all EU countries, crucial growth
in the sector will be stifled and the eEurope objectives will not be met," warned
Kaisu Karvala, Chair GSM Europe. "It is imperative, not just for our members,
but the whole European economy that the investment issue is dealt with at the
very highest levels of government.
"The correct EU and national policies are essential to create a secure and trusted
environment in which 3GSM mobile services can continue to grow and prosper - helping
Europe become more globally competitive," continued Karvala.
Mobile communication has already delivered major economic, social, environmental
and personal benefits to Europe, as the EC has previously highlighted. But
continuing research and innovation is crucial. GSM Europe urges the EU governments
to at least match the research resources being made available in Asia and the
US in order to remain globally competitive
