Purpose of the Pre Commercial Implementation Trials

The IPX Pre-Commercial Implementation (PCI) Project, led by the GSMA and involving a wide range of Mobile Network Operators, Fixed Network Operators and IPX Providers will verify the design and operation of the IPX through a series of practical trials of packet voice interworking and other services. The suitability of the IPX and the breadth of its capabilities are being demonstrated, including the following functionality:

IPX PCI Project objectives are:

Timing and Achievements

IPX PCI Project commenced in April 2007 and is expected to conclude in September 2008.

Phase 1 of the trials has already validated key IPX features and demonstrated that IPX is a suitable carrier grade interconnect medium for packet voice. Phase 2 trials, which are ongoing, are designed to demonstrate the global reach and openness of IPX. A selection of the current participants, representing a range of MNOs, FNOs and IPX providers is shown in the graphic panel.

Benefits of Participation in the Trials

The trials are open to:

Participants in IPX PCI Project will develop an understanding of IPX based on practical experience and could potentially develop a commercial solution earlier than non-participants. It is likely that the Operators and IPX Carriers who are involved in the trials will consider keeping trial configurations in place, therefore providing for operational IP service interworking.

Operators can provide an opportunity for their favoured carrier to implement IPX early by electing them for participation in trials. Carriers interested in providing IPX services are encouraged to discuss the opportunity to participate in trials with Operator partners. The ability of a carrier to implement and test their IPX capability is likely to have a major benefit to them in terms of "time to market" advantage.

Participating organisations do not need to be members of the GSM Association.
