GSM Association Welcomes
Second GSM Deployment in Iraq
Increased GSM coverage will accelerate reconstruction
London, UK: 11th June 2003: The
GSM Association has welcomed the news that GSM has
been successfully deployed in Southern Iraq – the
second GSM network to be announced in the last month.
Rob Conway, CEO of the GSM Association and member
of its board said, "Once again, GSM is making
a significant contribution to the vital humanitarian
aid and reconstruction efforts in Iraq."
MTC-Vodafone has been granted authority by the Joint
Communications Authority Board Iraq and the United
Kingdom Ministry of Defence to install and operate
a GSM network within Southern Iraq aimed at supporting
the Coalition’s reconstruction efforts and non-government
organizations as they deliver humanitarian aid to key
locations. The GSM service is now live and providing
coverage along the key supply routes and in the City
of Basra.
In May, MCI was authorized by the US Government to
construct a GSM network in Baghdad.
"The choice of the world’s leading mobile
standard for Iraq reflects the speed with which GSM
can be deployed. With more than 60 million users in
the Arab World and approaching one billion worldwide,
GSM is uniquely placed to aid Iraq’s reintegration
into the regional and global economies," said
Conway.
