joyn Innovation Challenge

The joyn Innovation Challenge

The joyn Innovation Challenge is an initiative to encourage innovation based on joyn. The challenge will stimulate mobile and web app developers and technology innovators to build on the core capabilities of joyn and explore ideas for new and attractive services. Using the joyn ‘innovation accelerator’ a developer can use APIs on a live GSMA Rich Communication Services (RCS) network, and will be able to quickly turn ideas into reality in this developer-friendly environment. As these APIs have already been standardised, it will be easy for any new services to be transferred to a live operator commercial network as they become available. And there’s a competition involved where the best new ideas will be showcased on the GSMA’s exhibition stand at the Mobile World Congress, 2013. Registration of your interest will be via this form.

What is joyn

joyn is the consumer facing brand for the first of the GSMA’s Rich Communication services. Consumers using joyn will find it makes everyday mobile to mobile communications more engaging. Its enriched communication features brings users closer to the people in their mobile address book by combining all the ways they want to be in touch – Contacts, Chat, File share and Video share. Easy to use, and available natively or as a downloadable client, joyn is ‘just there’ and ‘it just works’. The joyn brand helps consumers to identify this package of services, which are part of the GSMA’s RCS portfolio.

Visit the websites for more information about joyn and RCS.

Enter our competition to find the best joyn innovation

We are running a competition to encourage developers to produce new innovations and services for joyn. Why not enter your idea? The best entry, as decided by the joyn innovation challenge panel of judges, will receive the prestigious ‘joyn Innovation Challenge Award’ that recognises the most innovative, compelling and creative idea developed using the joyn platform.

Developing and evolving these core services – Contact management, Chat and File share with Video share to come later – new ideas and applications for joyn will emerge to drive interest in and the use of joyn and other RCS services by global consumers. Your idea could be the one that sparks off a new business opportunity for an international mobile operator.

Accept the challenge and grab your opportunity to fast-track your new product ideas to the key mobile market influencers, culminating with a public showcase at the world’s largest telecommunication event – the Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, 2013 – an event that attracted over 67,000 visitors in 2012.

Winners will be decided by a panel of judges representing leading operator and equipment vendors, chaired by the GSMA’s Chief Technology Officer, Alex Sinclair.  Closing date of the competition is January 8th 2013. Go to the Entry & Judging page to know if you have been short-listed for the judging event.

The joyn Innovation Accelerator

Developers wanting to explore the RCS APIs can do so using the joyn ‘Innovation Accelerator’. The Innovation Accelerator gives developers global access to a live GSMA Rich Communication Services (RCS) network where they can build on RCS APIs and test their new service or application ideas in a trusted and safe environment. Use of the Innovation Accelerator is free and you do not have to enter the competition in order to use the Innovation Accelerator. Developers wishing to use the accelerator should register via the joyn Innovation Accelerator website.

The Innovation Accelerator was launched at the joyn Innovation Challenge workshop in Berlin, November 8th. Use of the Accelerator will be subject to a separate registration in order to explore the joyn API test environment.
