Tier 1 Hosting Service
The data owner provisions ENUM registry delegation information against it’s numbers. Delegation information is a set of pointers in the form of NameServer addresses. These address are provided to query users who query the numbers.
Tier 1 Explained
The ENUM Tier 1 is responsible for resolving which operator is responsible for a subscriber number and therefore provides number portability correction for IP services. Results are delivered in the form of the address of the operator’s Tier 2 registry.
Tier 1 usually covers an individual country and tells users which Tier 2 to query for any given number.
PathFinder Tier 1 Hosting Applications
An organisation responsible for providing Tier 1 can use PathFinder as its core registry, or provide a copy of the data in PathFinder to position the data nearer international querying parties.
Partial Tier 1 Option
Implementing Carrier ENUM is possible in a country where Tier 1 has not yet been implemented – through a Partial Tier 1 in PathFinder. This involves the data owner provisioning pointers to its Tier 2 ENUM registry at Tier 1 level in PathFinder for its own numbers. Operators can apply ENUM at their own pace and in advance of full national coordination.
